How Binaural Beats Work
In order to explain what Binaural Beats actually do we're going to get slightly technical for a moment. But if this goes over your head don't worry, you don't need to understand the technical side to feel the effects.
Now, in the same way that electrical equipment runs at certain frequencies so does the brain, these frequencies are known as brainwaves and are measured in Hertz (Hz). When we are in high states of anxiety the speed of our brainwaves increase, when we are relaxed the speed decreases. This is the key to understanding what Binaural Beats do.
Brainwave States
When the brain is in an awake and aware state it is usually running at somewhere between 20 ~ 200 Hz. When we are in a relaxed, receptive state of mind, perhaps engrossed in a good movie or book, our brainwaves run at around 20 ~ 25 Hz, this is known as the Beta State.
In states of deep meditation our brains run at around 8~10 Hz, the Alpha State. And in deep sleep, where the regenerative facilities of the body kick in (replacing dead cells, refreshing the mind, etc.) our brains run at around 4hz, the Delta State.
Brainwave States
- Delta : 1 ~ 4 Hz - Deep sleep, regenerative effects, loss of bodily awareness
- Theta : 4 ~ 8 Hz - Dream state, deep meditation, intuitive awareness, REM sleep
- Alpha : 8 ~ 14 Hz - Awake, focussed on inner world, relaxation
- Beta : 14 ~ 40 Hz - Awake, focussed on outer world
- Gamma : 40 Hz + Higher mental activity, fight of flight, fear, complex problem solving
The Discovery of Binaural Beats
Thanks to some ground breaking research by Doctor Gerald Oster in 1973, it was learned that audio signals can affect the brain and train it (or 'entrain' to use the technical term) to automatically move into certain frequency ranges.
How it works is that a slightly different sound frequency is sent to each ear through stereo headphones. The difference between the two frequencies matches the frequency we want to entrain the brain to.
So for example, if the left ear is sent a sound frequency of 200 Hz and the right ear is sent one of 205 Hz the brainwaves automatically begin to vibrate at the difference between these two signals (ie. 5 Hz). The technical term for this reaction is 'frequency following response'.
Ennora Binaural Beats
Active research began on this amazing phenomenon back in 1973, that's over 30 years ago. Since then our understanding of brainwaves has come a long way. A lot of research has been done on long-time meditators to find the exact frequency ranges that bring about deep states of receptivity, tranquility, concentration, etc. as well as the best way to 'entrain' the brain into these states.
Drawing on this vast library of research, and using the most advanced laboratory grade beat creation tools available today, we've created a range of high quality Binaural Beats recordings that bring listeners into those tranquil states of mind easily and effectively.
All of our recordings are created by a sound engineer with over 15 years recording experience as well as over 15 years of meditation experience. They feature professionally recorded nature sounds and soothing music to help the mind relax as the barely audible binaural beats tracks work their magic.
